Q-What are the main differences between 300 and 400 series stainless steel needles?

A: 300 series stainless steel balls contain chromium and nickel and are non-magnetic. They have better corrosion resistance than400 series.They are less brittle, and can be hardened by cold working.

A 400 series stainless steel ball is straight chromium. It contains more carbon to make it magnetic, and offers less corrosion protection than 300 series. It can be readily heat treated to increase hardness, making it more brittle. Martensitic grades are specified forapplications that demand strength, hardness and wear resistance.

Q:what are Needle bearings?

A-Needle bearings have a large surface area that is in contact with the bearing outer surfaces compared to ball bearings. Additionally there is less added clearance so they are much more compact. The typical structure consists of an inner race, a needle cage which orients and contains the needle rollers, the needle rollers themselves, and an outer race.

Q: Why are 52100 steel bearings common,as opposed to bearings from other steels?

A: 52100 steel has been used in the manufacturing of bearings for over 75 years. 52100 steel bearings are made from high-carbon chromium steel, with small quantities of silicon and manganese. 52100 steel bearings are exceptionally hard and wear resistant,and are an excellent choice for applications where operating temperatures are 350°F and below.

52100 steel bearings have a higher dynamic load capacity than 440C stainless steel and are substantially lower in cost than bearings manufactured from M Series material.

A: The ABEC scale is a qualitative ranking of the tolerances of precision bearings. Bearings are rated 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9. The higher the ABEC number,the more precise are the tolerances. Many commercial and even automotive applications are satisfied using ABEC 1 bearings. Most aerospace applications,however, require higher ABEC rated bearings.

Passivation is a chemical treatment performed on stainless steel to remove any free irons on the material surface that could cause corrosion. All standard catalog needles are mildly passivated during our wash cycle. If additional passivation is required (to ASTM-967 Method E standards), a special order is required.
