In precision turning and grinding, maintaining a consistent machining datum is critical. Traditional fixed‑center face drivers can struggle when workpiece center holes vary in depth, causing axial positioning errors. Movable center point drive pins solve this problem. These pins are used in face drivers where the center point can move axially—most notably in the FSB / SB series and equivalent designs from other manufacturers.

Unlike fixed center designs, a movable center point is not rigidly locked. When the tailstock advances, the movable center pin contacts the workpiece center hole first. As tailstock thrust increases, the center point retracts axially—moving backward into the driver body—while the surrounding drive pins engage the workpiece end face. This sequence ensures that regardless of how deep or shallow the center hole is, the end face datum remains absolutely constant. The clamping force is generated purely mechanically by tailstock pressure, requiring no external hydraulic or pneumatic power.
