ID (Inverse Drill) bits, also known as back drilling or controlled-depth drilling bits, are specialized PCB (Printed Circuit Board) drill bits used to create blind vias or through-holes with controlled depths. These holes are drilled from one side of the PCB but do not penetrate all the way through to the other side.
PCB micro drill bits are classified according to outer dimensions, including ID type drill bits and conventional drill bits. ID type drill bits: the drill diameter is larger than the shank diameter. conventional drill bit: The drill diameter is smaller than the shank diameter.
The purpose of using ID drills is to remove the copper plating or conductive layers from inner layers of a multilayer PCB, without drilling all the way through the board. This is particularly important in high-speed digital circuits to reduce signal reflections and improve signal integrity.
ID drills have a special design that allows them to drill to a specific depth without penetrating through the entire thickness of the PCB. They are equipped with a depth stop mechanism or other features that control the drilling depth accurately.
ID drills are essential tools in PCB manufacturing for creating controlled-depth holes, particularly in multilayer boards where signal integrity is critical. They help ensure reliable and high-performance electronic circuits by reducing signal distortions and reflections.
